As part of our Ramadan spotlight series, AWN is recognising the work of Sufra NW London and the wider network of grassroots organisations responding to food insecurity across the capital during the holy month.
Based in North West London, Sufra provides emergency food aid, hot meals and wider support to individuals and families experiencing financial hardship. During Ramadan, their work intensifies significantly, with demand increasing as households face additional pressure to provide food for iftar and suhoor.
Recent reporting has highlighted the scale of this response, with tens of thousands of meals being prepared and distributed to those in need. For many families, this support is essential to being able to observe Ramadan with dignity while managing rising living costs.
The need reflects a broader reality. For households already navigating financial hardship, Ramadan can bring additional strain as food costs increase alongside existing pressures such as rent and energy bills. Without local support, many would struggle to meet even basic needs.
Sufra responds to this need in a way that is immediate and locally grounded. Through food banks, hot meal provision and community support, they ensure that assistance reaches people quickly and in a way that reflects the realities of their communities.
Beyond meeting immediate need, this work plays a wider civic role. It reduces isolation, strengthens local ties and creates spaces where people can access support with dignity.
At AWN, we see this as a clear example of grassroots civic action. Local organisations responding directly to the needs around them and translating Ramadan generosity into practical, place-based impact.
