1. What’s your role at AWN, and what do you focus on day to day?
I am the Chief Executive at AWN, responsible for leading the organisation’s strategy, delivery and partnerships. Day to day, I focus on ensuring we provide practical, meaningful support to Muslim-led charities, strengthening our programmes, refining our systems, and helping the team do their best work. A big part of my job is also building strong relationships with funders and partners to expand what AWN can offer the sector.
2. What drew you to work at AWN, and what do you enjoy most about being part of the team?
I have spent most of my career working within Muslim civil society, so AWN’s mission felt like a natural home. I have seen how much our community organisations contribute and how often they are under-resourced, and AWN fills a gap that really matters. What I enjoy most is the team’s shared purpose. Everyone is genuinely committed to seeing Muslim-led charities grow, strengthen and thrive.
3. What is your professional background or one key experience that shapes how you work today?
A key part of my background is founding the Muslim Leadership Foundation nine years ago. Building an organisation from the ground up, with a focus on serving communities rather than chasing status, shaped how I approach leadership today. It taught me the importance of strong governance, clear systems and values-led decision-making, all of which guide how I support organisations through AWN.
4. What is something you enjoy outside of work (a hobby, interest, or cause you care about)?
Outside of work, I love travelling to places with deep Islamic history because it is where I feel most grounded. And most importantly, I am a dad to a lively five-year-old, so a lot of my free time is spent with him, exploring new places or just trying to keep up with his energy.
