As part of our Ramadan spotlight series, AWN is recognising the work of Coffee Afrik CIC and their “Ramadan Give Back 2026” initiative in East London.
Rather than a single project, the initiative brings together a range of community-led activities focused on translating the values of Ramadan into direct, local action.
At its core is a strong emphasis on youth leadership. The programme is designed and delivered by young people who are organising and leading support within their own communities. Their work reflects a model of leadership that is grounded, practical and rooted in service.
During Ramadan, one of the primary activities involves preparing and distributing food to homeless individuals and families experiencing hardship across East London. Alongside this, volunteers are carrying out small, consistent acts of support across neighbourhoods, from sharing meals to providing warm supplies for those in need.
This approach centres on a simple idea. That care should be immediate, local and rooted in relationships, not only delivered through formal systems.
The initiative also connects community service with spiritual reflection, encouraging volunteers to embody the values of Ramadan through action.
Beyond the month itself, Coffee Afrik CIC continues to invest in longer-term community infrastructure through youth hubs and initiatives aimed at supporting individuals facing financial hardship.
At AWN, we see this as a clear example of grassroots civic action. Youth-led, locally rooted and focused on meeting immediate needs while strengthening community ties.
This is our final Ramadan spotlight. Across this series, we have seen how grassroots organisations are responding to real needs within their communities, often without visibility or recognition. From supporting vulnerable women, to providing food and essential supplies, to reaching those in the most overlooked settings, this work reflects a deeper form of civic responsibility.
Ramadan is a time when generosity increases. What this series has shown is how that generosity is carried forward through consistent, local action that holds communities together.
